Tessa Kersey

Tessa aka “Sissy”, at the time being 18mo, started running a low grade fever on May 5, 2024. Her temperature would regulate itself without any medicine and she wasn’t showing any other symptoms. On May 8th her daycare called to say she was running a fever. By the time we got home her temperature was normal until that night. Her fever had spiked up to 103. The next day, May 9th, I decided to take her to her primary care physician. They chalked it up to being a viral infection and sent us home with a steroid prescription. We finished up the steroid treatment which was 5 days total. She was eating, drinking, playing and acting fine but she couldn’t shake the fevers. I was sitting on the couch with her while she was asleep in my lap and the word “leukemia” kept popping in my head. So I opened up the google search engine and typed in “symptoms of leukemia”. At the time Tessa didn’t have any symptoms except bruising a little easier. I texted her doctor and asked if we could put her on an antibiotic because she was still running fevers and I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t anything bacterial. She agreed and sent in a 10 day treatment of amoxicillin. After the 2nd day of using the antibiotics, Tessa stopped eating, drinking and playing. On May 16th, I texted my husband and told him we needed to take her to the childrens emergency room. They did a nose swab and did blood work. Her respiratory panel came back positive for two viruses. We were so relieved it was something that had to run its course. Until the blood work came back showing extremely low blood counts. Tessa was admitted that night and had a bone marrow biopsy the following day. May 20th Tessa was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). As of today, September 1st, 2024, we are in the middle of our 4th cycle of chemo. She is considered low-risk so transplant is off the table for us and she will be finished with treatment after the 5th cycle is complete. My family and I could not get through this without Gods faithfulness and steadfast love.
